WHAT’S PCOS ?
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome ( PCOS) is a hormonal problem that presents as a group of symptoms affecting women of childbearing age
Its three main features are:
- cysts in the ovaries
- high levels of male hormones causing irregular or skipped periods
- insulin resistance
In PCOS, many small, fluid-filled sacs grow inside the ovaries. Thus the word “polycystic” meaning“many cysts”, each one containing an immature egg that never mature enough to trigger ovulation.
This lack of ovulation makes estrogen and progesterone levels to be lower than usual, and androgen levels higher than usual thereby disrupting the menstrual cycle and making women with PCOS to have fewer periods than usual.
Also, 80% of women with PCOS are insulin resistant.
Insulin resistance occurs when your body doesn’t respond to insulin a (the hormone that lowers blood sugar) as it should, leading to high blood sugar levels and the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes
